• U.S. News & World Report (USN&WR) began publication of its magazine in 1948 while based in its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Among the principal staff photographers were: Mary Dean (1950s), Warren K. Leffler (hired mid-1950s), Thomas J. O'Halloran (hired 1952), and Marion S. Trikosko (hired 1957). These photographers were primarily responsible for assignments in the Washington, D.C., region, but also went on some special assignments outside the area. Foreign correspondents served as photographers when covering most international news topics and news topics in other parts of the country.
• Published volumes of the magazine are available. There are many more images in the U.S. News & World Report Magazine Photograph Collection than were published in the magazine, although not all published images are in the collection.
• Captions accompanying contact sheets identify the subject, job number, photographer's initials, and date of the job. Collection title devised.
• Preliminary subject card index and chronological job assignment logbooks created by U.S. News & World Report, inc., are available in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Reading Room. Some subject entries added to the file by Library staff to represent the holdings more fully. (Original logbooks in 4 binders are filed in the P&P Supplementary Archive.)
