Velen verdienden al sinds de jaren dertig hun boterham - of extra zakgeld - in de wereld van vermaak en vertier. Na de Duitse inval nam de vraag naar podiumkunst met een uitheems tintje alleen maar toe: mensen snakten naar afleiding van de grauwe werkelijkheid. Voor vele Duitse militairen - tuk op zwarte jazz, krontjong en Javaanse dans - gold hetzelfde, tot grote woede van NSB-leden en andere collaborateurs. Bovendien wilde het Duitse bewind het 'broedervolk' niet verontrusten door meteen alles te verbieden. De Kultuurkamer raakte in een crisis en de bezetter bleef worstelen met de ongekende diversiteit.
