Summary

This interview largely focuses on Sydney Boyd and her experience as an early-career child care worker. Sydney is from Richlands, Virginia and currently lives in Bristol, Virginia. She graduated from college in Spring of 2020, majoring in early childhood development. She has worked as the 4- and 5-year-old teacher at Miss Amy's Child Care since September of 2020. In her interview, Sydney discusses how her student teaching was canceled because of the pandemic; finishing her college program virtually; entering the workforce during the pandemic; the COVID-related safety protocols implemented at Miss Amy's; the pandemic's impact on children's development, and how she addressed these challenges; and staffing challenges that started with the pandemic. Toward the end of the interview, Amy Bowie becomes the primary interviewee. Amy is from Bristol, Virginia and is the owner of Miss Amy's, which she opened in 1990. She has worked in childcare for 48 years.
