Summary

On July 4, 1919, a mountain peak in the Black Hills is renamed and dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt. Located near Deadwood, S.D., in the region where TR hunted and ranched in the 1880's, Mount Roosevelt is dedicated by the Society of Black Hills Pioneers, of which TR had been an honorary member. Panoramic views of the Black Hills taken from Mount Roosevelt; crowd gathers for dedication service, with Leonard Wood, a close friend of TR and principal speaker at the ceremony, and Capt. Seth Bullock, TR's neighbor in his ranching days, speaking informally with crowd members; views of the speakers' platform, with the following men speaking at various points in service: South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, master of ceremonies; Leonard Wood; and former South Dakota Representative to Congress, Eben W. Martin (1901-1907, 1908-1915); also identified on platform are Capt. Bullock, at whose suggestion mountain is being renamed, and Roosevelt Memorial Association member, Hermann Hagedorn. Long shots of Roosevelt Monument, a circular tower with a parapet; on parapet three men raise an American flag. View of Leonard Wood walking along narrow ledge of monument to reach speakers' platform, erected in front of monument; close shot of bronze plaque set in side of monument, with inscription legible: In Memory of Theodore Roosevelt, The American.
