• הספר, שמתחיל בצורה מסקרנת ומשאיר טעם של עוד, הוא ספר זיכרונותיו של אלעזר יוספי, תושב בית חורון שבסביבות ירושלים ואזרח ישראל כבר שלושים וחמש שנים. בשנות השמונים הוא היה בין הפעילים הבולטים במאבק למען העלייה מברית המועצות, היה סירובניק במשך שבע שנים, למד ולימד עברית במחתרת, הפעיל גן ילדים ובית ספר יהודיים מחתרתיים, ושבת שביתת רעב במשך ארבעים יום. הקריירה המקצועית שלו כמדען נבלמה, הוא נעצר כמה פעמים ואף 'זכה' להיות תחת מעקב מתמיד של המשטרה החשאית, הקג"ב. ביד אומן הוא טווה בסיפורו את סיפור החיים בברית המועצות של אז, ומצליח לחבר את הקורא בצורה אינטליגנציה עירונית וקציני הצבא הסובייטי במקומות שכוחי אל, מקומיים רוסים ואוקראינים. התובנות השזורות בתוך הטקסט משלימות את התיאורים. במהלך הספר עובר כחוט השני תהליך ההתעוררות וההתפתחות של התודעה היהודית-הציונית של יהודי ברית המועצות, ביניהם גם של המחבר. השם "חישול הפלדה" הוא כפרפרזה לשם הספר הסובייטי שהיה ידוע גם בארץ בזמנו, "כיצד חושלה הפלדה". התהליך מיהודי סובייטי, בדרך כלל חסר זהות יהודית ולעיתים בראש מורכן ליהודי ציוני גאה, מברזל רך לפלדה קשוחה"--Back cover.
• "The book, which begins intriguingly and leaves you wanting more, is the memoirs of Elazar Yosef, a resident of Beit Horon near Jerusalem and an Israeli citizen for thirty-five years. In the 1980s, he was among the most prominent activists in the struggle for immigration from the Soviet Union, was a Sirovnik for seven years, studied and taught Hebrew underground, operated an underground Jewish kindergarten and school, and went on a hunger strike for forty days. His professional career as a scientist was hampered, he was arrested several times and even 'deserved' to be under constant surveillance by the secret police, the KGB. With a masterful hand, he weaves into his story the story of life in the Soviet Union at the time, and manages to connect the reader in a tangible way to what was happening in different strata and cultures of the Soviet population - large-scale Jews and small-town Jews, urban intelligentsia and Soviet army officers in remote places, Russian and Ukrainian locals. The insights woven into the text complement the descriptions. Throughout the book, the process of awakening and development of the Jewish-Zionist consciousness of the Jews of the Soviet Union, including the author, runs like a secondary thread. The name "The Forging of Steel" is a paraphrase of the title of the Soviet book that was also known in Israel at the time, "How the Steel Was Forged."
